The problem is that MariaDB takes some minutes to process the query for the network feed (the default page after login) for some users. This is a flaw in the database/query design in Friendica with current MariaDB versions and large tables. I know that the main database developer is using an older MariaDB version. So, it's hard to fix that.
I have done a lot of performance tests with different settings. But those queries remain painfully slow no matter what I try.
In the last weeks I have deleted a ton of old user accounts - around 4000 on venera.social and libranet.de combined. This is done now. I will optimize the database in the next days to ragain disk space and improve the general database performance.
When this doesn't help I will report the details of the slow queries an the bug tracker. Maybe someone can improve the code to match current MariaDB versions.
